History of GNYADA
1910
On February 24th, 1910, William Kouwenhoven, Burt Phillips, Joseph Rourk, Clifford Bishop, and I. Cleveland Kirkham presided over the first meeting of the Brooklyn Motor Vehicle Dealers Association at 1384 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.
1940s
Association headquarters move to Granada Hotel, Brooklyn, NY.
1947
Association's Health and Welfare Trust founded to provide quality healthcare insurance for dealer’s employees
1949
Brooklyn and Long Island Automobile Dealers Association merged with the New York Automobile Merchants Association to form the Greater New York, Long Island and Westchester Dealers Association.
1958
Peter Gordon heads up the Greater New York, Long Island and Westchester Automobile Dealers Association.
1970
Association moves to 1 Hanson Place, Brooklyn, NY.
1974
Association launches new Labor Plan to help dealers with recruitment and staff retention.
1980s
Decision made to erect a new building to house the Association. Committee members include: Morton Manes, Christopher Erb, Jim Farley, Marvin Suskin.
AUTOCAP mediation service introduced in New York to help consumers and dealers.
1981
The dealers association is renamed the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association the name that it has today.
1986
Association Offices: June 17th Dedication ceremony at 18-10 Whitestone Expressway, Whitestone, New York.
1987
Mark Schienberg named GNYADA CEO.
1988
Association works with NYS Attorney General to create first Automotive Advertising Guidelines. GNYADA launches Employee Relations Plan.
1990
GNYADA launches National Automotive Technology Competition. Largest school-to-work initiative of its kind with scholarships and prizes now totaling over $3m annually.
GNYADA creates annual World Traffic Safety Symposium to promote safety by bringing dealers, manufacturers, and safety experts together
1995
DMV-DIRECT opens its doors for the first time on August 1. This is the first time NYS DMV partners with a private sector.
2001
GNYADA members generously support families of 9/11 victims and emergency services personnel; help rebuild fire truck damaged at WTC.
2005
GNYADA opens $28m 90,000 sq. ft. Center for the Automotive Education & Training.
2009
"Cash for Clunkers' program helps dealerships through their most difficult time since the Great Depression by stimulating sales of more fuel-efficient vehicles.
GNYADA President, Mark Schienberg Inducted into Automotive Hall of Fame.
2010
GNYADA celebrates its 100-year anniversary with a Proclamation from Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in the Blue Room at City Hall exactly one hundred years to the day after the Association began.
The exhibition Cars, Culture & the City opens at the Museum of the City of New York, March 25th through August 8th to celebrate the Association's historical contribution to New York.
2021
In October, GNYADA hosted an Electric Vehicle Ride+Drive at the Association’s Education Center featuring 18 different EV models. The event was attended by more than 150 people including
over 40 legislators, government officials, and policymakers.
